ON THE MOVE campusreview.com.au UNSW GREETS NEW DEAN UNSW has appointed professor Susan Dodds dean of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. Dodds spent 19 years at the University of Wollongong, including a role as head of the School of English Literatures, Philosophy and Languages. Her research covers the areas of bioethics policymaking in pluralist democracies, human vulnerability and the ethical and social impact of developing technologies. Vice-chancellor professor Ian Jacobs expressed his support. “UNSW Arts & Social Sciences is in a strong position and I have no doubt professor Dodds will lift the faculty to the next level in its development.” BOND EXTENDS VC’S TERM STRICTLY SPEAKING | SATISFICE Bond University has agreed to extend professor Tim Brailsford’s role as vice-chancellor and president until 2022. “I am extremely grateful to the University Council and wider Bond community for the faith they have put in me,” Brailsford said. “Our focus is on students and the quality of their learning, overall experience and graduate outcomes. In all these areas, we excel and while we will experience modest growth over the next few years, we won’t grow so rapidly or to such a size that we [hurt] the quality of the student experience. Our students come first.” 28 ANU WELCOMES NEW VC Astrophysicist and Nobel Laureate, professor Brian Schmidt, has begun his role as vice-chancellor at ANU. Previously, he worked at the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics for 20 years. He is a graduate of the University of Arizona and Harvard. Under his leadership, Schmidt says, he hopes that ANU will focus on excellence in research and education and that the university will rank as one of the best in the world. “ANU is a place that does amazing things that are exciting for Australia and the world,” he says. “The goal is to be great at what we do.” LA TROBE ADDS ART DIRECTOR La Trobe University has announced the appointment of arts administrator and director Karen Quinlan. As part of her role, she will continue directing the Bendigo Art Gallery and will begin leading the La Trobe Arts Institute as the first professor of practice. Quinlan expressed her excitement over her new role and its many opportunities. “I am looking forward to working closely with regional, national and international partners to develop a range of innovative arts offerings
