A global contest is on to be the first to perfect a new kind of computing, and Australia needs to win it.

Without significant investment, Australia may lose the international race to build a quantum computer – a global research leader warns.
Professor Michelle Simmons, director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology, says while Australia is a world leader in technology development, investment is increasing overseas and other groups could start to overtake those working here.
Simmons says government investment has given researchers in the UK, Netherlands and US an opportunity to attract industrial support, while increasing global competition in quantum science. The UK Government has recently invested £ 270 million [$ 586 million ] in quantum technologies, and the Dutch Government granted € 300 million [$ 477 million ].
As quantum computing is predicted to affect 40 per cent of all Australian industries, Simmons says local government and industry need to augment ARC investment into this technology with more substantial and sustained support.
