HEALTH DEAN
James Cook
University welcomes
professor Maxine
Whittaker as dean of
the College of Public
Health, Medical and
Veterinary Sciences. Whittaker will manage
teaching and research in the fields of public
health, tropical medicine, biomedical
sciences, veterinary science and molecular
and cell biology.
“I am excited about the unique opportunity
JCU provides to advance the practice of
ecosystem health in its teaching, research
and engagement activities,” Whittaker said.
“JCU is unique in being the only university
in Australia with human, public and animal
health in the same division.”
Whittaker will take up the position in
Townsville in late February.

Professor Glyn Davis has
been invited to continue
as vice-chancellor at the
University of Melbourne
until December 31,
2018. Davis addressed
his excitement about the extension. “To
work with brilliant academic colleagues and
students at the University of Melbourne for
a further two years is an exciting prospect,”
he said. “It is a privilege to be part of this
outstanding scholarly community.”
Since his appointment in January 2005,
Davis has overseen the introduction of
the Melbourne Curriculum model, new
investment in research staff and facilities, and
an overhaul of campus administration. He
has also led a campaign raising $500 million
in philanthropic funds for the institution.

INDIGENOUS
STRATEGY DEAN
The University
of Canberra has
appointed professor
Peter Radoll dean
of Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander leadership
and strategy. Radoll is a descendant
of the Anaiwan people of New South
Wales and has extensive experience
in senior management of Indigenous
higher education.
“Being named Dean of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander Leadership and
Strategy at UC is not only surreal but also
a great honour. I’m very lucky to come
back to an institution that has done so
much for me. It feels like coming home,”
Radoll said.
He will commence the role on January 18.

AT UTAS
The University of
Tasmania has offered
professor Alison
Venn the new role
of Menzies Institute
for Medical Research director. Venn is
an internationally renowned population
health expert with broad experience in
chronic disease. She is well known for her
partnerships and collaborations with the
government, clinicians and the community.
Venn was delighted about her opportunity.
“I look forward to continuing to build
important partnerships for the institute
across the research sector,” she said. “I will
be actively encouraging the translation of
research into evidence-based healthcare
and policy.”
