Praise for departing minister
Evans
Peak university bodies have praised Senator Chris Evans for“ strengthening” the tertiary education sector following the announcement of his resignation as federal minister and decision not to contest the next election.
Universities Australia, the leading body for Australian universities, thanked Evans for his contribution and commitment to tertiary education.
“ Right across the portfolio, Senator Evans’ actions have strengthened the sector and by doing so, strengthened the country. His commitment, not to mention his good humour will be missed,” said the UA chair, Professor Glyn Davis.“ Senator Evans can be proud of his achievements in the sector. There is no doubt that the minister is a strong and committed advocate of the benefits of higher education.”
The Immigration Minister, Chris Bowen, will take over Evans’ s portfolio.
Davis said that since assuming the portfolio, Evans had been responsible for the implementation of recommendations of the Bradley review into higher education and for increasing investment in the sector. He said most notably Evans introduced the demand-driven system through the removal of caps on university places which has seen record numbers of Australians, including those from low socio-economic backgrounds, enrol at universities.“ Senator Evans’ commitment to developing a more equitable university system is without precedent and the personal energy and drive that he devoted to achieving this goal is to be commended,” Davis said.
The Regional Universities Network also applauded the outgoing minister for his contribution to higher education. RUN chair Professor David Battersby said the network acknowledged that the minister defended the higher education budget during a difficult period of fiscal constraint for the government.
Battersby said Evans recognised the importance of higher education in regional Australia and the contribution that regional universities make to the economic, social, cultural and environmental development of their regions.“ Improved indexation, the successful implementation of the demand driven system and commitment to equity and access programs were delivered,” Battersby said.
TAFE Directors Australia( TDA) also extended its congratulations
to Evans for his commitment to TAFE. TDA said that Evans has shown an open-door attitude to consultation, with a key legacy of identifying the role of TAFE as the public provider network, which was critical to Australia’ s productivity as articulated under federal and COAG agreements. ■
