Double degree, with work experience
When Annabelle Williams signed up to study both international relations and law at Bond University, she assumed that everyone who studied law did double degrees.
While this was not the case, in her cohort of school leavers she also had friends studying other combinations such as commerce and law.
Future earnings or return on investment weren’ t the motivation she says – rather, she enjoyed the mix for the variety it provided each semester.
“ It has also provided more options and was a good way to break up the degree. Law for example has very strict requirements while international relations was more flexible. If anything, I feel the combination lightened the load,” she said.
Williams completed an internship with the Australian Trade Commission in Paris in 2009 and another with the Perennial Strategy Group in Washington DC last year.
In between studying she also managed an international swimming career, including medals at both the Beijing and London Paralympics and a number of world records.
She has started her law career at Allens – a position that was held for her since a summer clerkship with the firm at the end of 2010.“ Allens seemed to like people who bring some diversity to the team. I feel the double degree was invaluable.”
Williams says she is confident postgraduate study will be part of her future – perhaps in the specialty area of sports law.

“ The opportunity to share, learn and grow with fellow leaders from many disciplines across the sector was priceless. We each lived our own journey and that of others over the 8 months. To reflect upon where we all started, and to see where we have all grown over the year, highlights the value of the program. Mark was a tremendous facilitator and mentor. He always has some wisdom to contribute and took a personal interest in each of us and our careers. I highly recommend this program to all early research leaders.”
