Return to normal

Australian universities learning plans for 2023 .

The majority of Australia ’ s major universities will ditch remote learning and make a full transition to face-toface classes starting this year .

As of February 2023 , staff and students from the University of Sydney and the
University of Melbourne will be expected to attend classes ’ in-person .
International students holding student visas will also be required to appear on campus , following a TEQSA requirement set to come into effect 30 June .
Last year , Melbourne University said forms of online delivery will be made available to some graduate certificates , such as nursing and early education . “ We are also providing advice on study options for those who may be unable to return by February ,” a university spokesperson told Campus Review .
UNSW plans to use Semester 1 as a “ transition ” period before moving entirely to in-person lectures in late May .
A UNSW spokesperson said faculties may decide to offer classes ’ online if dual delivery is included in the syllabus .
“ This approach allows teachers the flexibility to harness excellent innovations in the digital space developed over the past few years ,” UNSW told Campus Review .
ANU returned to face-to-face learning for most of its classes during 2022 .
This year , the Canberra-based university will complete the full transition to in-person study with all students expected on campus for Semester 2 .
“ We recognise the pandemic has been an extraordinary time in history and caused major challenges and disruptions for some ANU students ,” a university spokesperson told Campus Review .
“ We ’ ll continue to make support available for those who need it .”
Perth ’ s Curtin University also said it will continue its full face-to-face return to campus in 2023 , “ with online and flexible options available where applicable .”
The University of Queensland plans to make a full transition to in-person starting Semester 2 .
A UQ spokesperson told Campus Review it will continue to offer online learning in Semester 1 , and will “ continue encouraging international students to return to campus .”
“ We will work with students where possible to support offshore study if circumstances prevent them from returning to Australia ,” they said . ■
