STRICTLY SPEAKING | FLATION WORDS
Looking at data from dictionaries can be like reading the rings of trees that encode historical changes in the environment from drought to flood to fire . Inflation , originally meaning swelling with air or gas , was first used in the sense of price increase in the early 19 th century . It wasn ’ t until the mid-1960s that the Oxford English Dictionary started to record creative use of -flation as a suffix in this economic sense : stagflation ( 1965 ), slumpflation ( 1974 ), taxflation ( 1976 ). Unsurprisingly , the formation of these new words coincided with a period of high inflation – what is sometimes called ‘ The Great Inflation ’ is considered to have lasted from 1965 to 1982 . They are no longer in current use , but now that inflation is on the rise once more , new -flation words are being invented . There ’ s the self-explanatory greedflation , ripflation ( producers making bogus claims about the effects of the pandemic to inflate prices and rip-off customers ), and shrink / skimpflation ( where the price doesn ’ t necessarily increase , but the size or quality of goods goes down ). Such coinages may disappear without trace , but if inflation continues to rise they may persist and proliferate sufficiently to be recorded in dictionaries as a permanent record of this period of financial distress .
