Melbourne on top

Vic capital is fifth best city in the world for students .

Melbourne has been recognised as Australia ’ s top study destination for the eighth year in a row .

In the 2023 QS Best Student Cities Ranking , only two Australian cities ranked among the world ’ s top 10 , with Melbourne leading in fifth place ahead of Berlin , Tokyo and Paris .
Sydney followed behind , ranking 9th in the world for its popularity among students .
Brisbane leapt six places from last year to 24 . Adelaide followed at 31 , with Perth and Canberra ranking 34 and 35 respectively .
The QS city rankings were based on a range of factors , including affordability , quality of life and employers ’ perceptions of universities .
This year ’ s list also considered the perspectives of over 98,000 current and prospective students around the world .
“ With a broad and diverse student population that remains enamoured with its cities long after graduation , Australia is right at the top of the world ’ s best study destinations ,” said QS senior vice president Ben Sowter .
“ But as with many of the top student destinations , these benefits come alongside significant financial considerations for students .”
Melbourne is home to five of Australia ’ s top universities , including the University of Melbourne , which ranked 33rd globally in the most recent QS World University Rankings .
Monash University , located in the city ’ s centre , also recently ranked first in the world for pharmacy and pharmacology degrees .
In the most recent city rankings , seven Australian cities declined in the affordability indicator , which QS analysts found to be consistent across the globe .
“ Worryingly , the world ’ s cities are broadly becoming less affordable for students by QS ’ measures , with just under 90 % declining in this metric ,” said Sowter .
London took the world ’ s top spot for the fourth consecutive year , followed by Seoul and Munich in second place .
The highest-ranked US study centre was Boston , likely due to its close proximity to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard . ■
