ZOMBIE TERMS
Browsing through the Cambridge Dictionary ’ s new words blog , as you do , it ’ s noticeable how many new compounds are being formed with the word zombie as the first element . Some of these refer to that horror movie staple ’ s habit of returning from the dead , like zombie storms that appear to have died out but return with renewed vigour ; or zombie batteries – dead batteries that come back to life and cause fires if not disposed of properly . There are lots of finance-related terms , to describe entities that are moribund such as the zombie account that pays virtually no interest , or are animated by an external force ( the zombie bank that is insolvent but allowed to keep trading , or the zombie economy that needs constant shoring up ). A zombie law can be either a law that is no longer enforceable , or a law to stop people from behaving like zombies , specifically pedestrians who create a hazard by crossing the road while zoned out on their mobile phone . The online Macquarie Dictionary even records a use of zombie as a verb : to reappear after “ ghosting ” ( ceasing communication with ) someone , and wanting to restart a relationship with them . Far from extinguishing superstition , modern technology seems to be bringing it back to life .
