Go8 dominates US global uni ranking .

The Group of Eight ( Go8 ) has made

a clean sweep of the top Australian spots in the latest global university ranking .
The 2021 Best Global Universities by U . S . News & World Report ranks nearly 1,500 top institutions across 86 countries using
13 indicators , including global research reputation , publications , conferences , citations and international collaboration .
The University of Melbourne again climbed to the top of the national peak and landed at a lofty 25th on the world ladder , one spot up from last year .
University of Sydney was still nipping at its heals – it was again 27th in the world . The university said it performed particularly strongly in regional research reputation ( 2nd ), books ( 9th ) and in the number of highly cited papers that are among the top 1 per cent most cited ( 27th ).
Professor Duncan Ivison , deputy vicechancellor ( research ) at USyd , said : “ While rankings don ’ t measure everything we as a university value , they are an important indicator of research excellence and it is gratifying to see that we maintained our strong global position in these rankings .
“ The results cap off an excellent year for Sydney in rankings – in which we maintained or improved our position in all major rankings .”
The University of Queensland took out the bronze for Australia ( 36th in the world ), while Monash University scraped into the top 50 at 48th .
Next up were the University of New South Wales ( 51 ), Australian National University ( 64 ), the University of Adelaide ( 73 ) and the University of Western Australia ( 79 ).
UTS was the highest ranked of Australian universities outside of the Go8 , coming in at number 162 in the world . ■

Four Aussie unis get top 50 nod in ranking of scientific papers .

Four Australian universities have been

named in the top 50 in a world ranking of scientific papers – one for the first time .
National Taiwan University ' s Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities , hosted by professor of library and information science Dr Mu-Hsuan
Huang , provides an overall ranking , six field rankings and 24 subject rankings .
It looks at research productivity , impact and excellence , taking into account measures like number of articles , number of citations and number of articles in highimpact journals .
Of Australia ’ s ranked institutions , the University of Melbourne came out on top , landing at number 23 . Next up was the University of Sydney at 31 , followed by the University of Queensland at 39 .
And for the first time , Monash University climbed into the top 50 field , rising eight places to 45 .
Monash University president and vicechancellor Professor Margaret Gardner said the results were the university ’ s best ranking performance to date , and reinforced Monash ' s global reputation as a researchintensive university .
“ The NTU Ranking further cements Monash ’ s place as a leader in the global research community at a time when the world is looking to our foremost researchers for solutions to such unprecedented challenges ,” Gardner said .
Overall , Harvard and Stanford Universities in the US and Canada ’ s University of Toronto took out the top three spots .
When split by field , the University of Queensland was Australia ’ s top university for agriculture , coming in at number three , while UNSW was 47 for engineering and Monash was 77 for natural sciences .
Cementing its top national spot , the University of Melbourne was Australia ’ s best performer in social sciences ( 15 overall ), life sciences ( 21 ) and medicine ( 22 ).
When it came to subject rankings , the University of Queensland held Australia ’ s only top five spot – reaching number four for environment / ecology . ■
