STRICTLY SPEAKING | GET-UP
This informal word has multiple senses – not all overlapping – depending on which dictionary you consult . They do agree on get-up being an unusual costume or outfit which draws attention to the wearer . “ Get-up nights ” are a suburban extravaganza for people “ dressed in their finest Spiderman , Wolverine , Captain America and Ninja Turtle get-up ”. Examples like these abound in the international GloWbE corpus of blogs and websites ( 2013 ), showing that get-up is used in this sense around 90 per cent of the time in the US and Great Britain . In Australia the rate is only half that relative to other uses of the word . The next most frequent use – apart from the activist group Get-Up – is get-up used as a legal term for the features that make up a product ’ s look ( its shape , colour , size , material ), which are protected by civil law . Any company found imitating another ’ s getup in goods presented for sale can be challenged . The right to use the Peanut Butter Trade Dress ‘ a jar with a yellow lid , yellow label …’ was recently claimed by Kraft . This legal use of get-up is first recorded in relation to book publishing in 1857 ( Oxford English Dictionary online ), which lends a certain irony to its first citation for the saying “ never judge a book by its cover ” in 1872 . Perhaps Australian scepticism means we tend not to judge people by their get-up either .
