By Dallas Bastian U nlike last year, no Australian university managed to hit the top spot on global rankings of academic subjects. Still, some reached the upper echelons of ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s 2019 lists. Griffith University returned Australia’s best position, coming in second on the Hospitality & Tourism Management table, while the University of Queensland was ranked 4th. That wasn’t the only subject for which those universities were listed among the top 10. The former was 4th for Nursing and the latter 3rd for Mining & Mineral Engineering and 9th for Metallurgical Engineering. While UQ’s position for Mining & Mineral Engineering was Australia’s second best, it was a step down for the university, which last year took out the top spot for the subject. The University of New South Wales and Monash University were Australia’s top performers when measured by the number of times they beat out their homegrown competition. UNSW was Australia’s best player in 12 subjects, while Monash was best in nine subjects. Other Australian universities to make the top 10 for a subject were James Cook University, the Universities of Tasmania, Newcastle, New South Wales, Western Australia and Sydney, along with Monash and the University of Technology Sydney. Universities from the United States took pole positions in 35 subjects, while Chinese universities dominated 11 subjects. The best performing institution was Harvard University, coming out on top across 14 subjects.
