Revealed:why LASU SUG quit protest over hike in school fees.

S
UG!!! Aluta
continua!!! The
fear of student
unionism is the
beginning of wisdom for
U n i v e r s i t y
administrators. Maybe
that is why it has been
scrapped by some
Nigerian Universities,
but for those that still
have a Student Union
Government in place,
their main objective is to
reduce its power and
weaken it's Lasu is one
on these schools and
when we caught up with
Comrade Adeleke
Stephen, the LASU
SUG PRO, he had a lot
to say. Firstly the present
executives have not
been inaugurated,
something that should
have been done months
ago. If that was not a
clear enough sign that the
school wanted them
eradicated I don't know
what else could be. "
Though they have been
inaugurating the past
excos and they also did so
for our set. I don't know
why they haven't
inaugurated the
incumbent executives.
Although the school
management has been
trying to subside the
SUG but the SUG is an
indomitable force that
cannot be subjected to
domination or
influence. You knw
students unionism is like
a threat to the order
(school administration)
that is on campus and
lagos state itself. We
kick against every form
of dehumanization,
oppression and forceful
depotism that may try to
encroach on d integrity
of the union".
Every democracy has
checks and balances in
place, instruments to
guide against the misuse
of power. The SUG
seems like the only
check against the
school's government. So
when we asked Mr
Adeleke why the SUG
didn't fight the
increment of the school
fees his reply was
startling. "SUG has
remained mute on the
skyrocketed school fees
because most of the union
members want to graduate.
We know we failed the
students by not overturning
the government's decree,
but really it's a fight for all.
Not only the SUG. Labour
unions,social movement
etc, it's not easy fighting
the government. But they
will be forced to reduce the
fees because of the 2015
elections as a campaign
strategy. Well the fight
goes on, the SUG doesn't
plan to relent and the
school's government is hell
bent on scrapping or
stopping or deposing them.
Hopefully we will all get
what we want, a smooth
running university that is
conducive for learning and
research purposes.
