the ALUMNUS
Jennifer’s brother, Todd, is ten years older and has a seven year-old daughter, Nicole. Entrenched in the day-to-day lifestyle of a hardworking insurance agent and family man, it’s been a while since he’s reflected on his days at camp. One day, while sitting at his desk, he receives an email prompting him to join the camp’s alumni community. The email has photos from his era, and he is intrigued when he recognizes his old division leader. He clicks on the link and browses photos that flood him with memories of camp life. Todd registers through the camp’s website and updates his contact information. He also lets the camp know that he has a daughter – a potential camper! Entering this information automatically creates a lead record for Nicole. After browsing through the photos and reminiscing about old times, Todd signs up for the alumni reunion. Before the reunion, the director runs a report to familiarize himself with the attendees who have children of camp age. When the director runs into Todd at the reunion, he is sure to ask him if Nicole is ready for camp. Todd responds, “Maybe?” Todd has a great day at the reunion. He even runs into his former counselor, Robert! It turns out that Robert sold a successful mobile app that digitally staples PDFs. He’s done well for himself and regularly donates to the camp’s fundraising campaigns. Robert has two sons who attend camp, and they also love it! He encourages Todd to send Nicole. The seed has been planted, and a new camper generation is born.
CONTACT CARD Robert’s contact card includes his most up-to-date information. At any time, he can log in to his online account to make changes if he moves or gets a new phone number. PERIODIC TABLE OF CONTACTS The Periodic Table of Contacts System helps you understand who this person is, at a glance. Robert is a former camper of seven years (Fo) and a 4th year hired staff member (Hi). He is also the parent of enrolled campers (Pe) and an active donor (Do). All of this information helps you piece together Robert’s relationship with camp.
the DONOR
It’s a busy spring day in the camp office and the phone rings. It’s Robert asking if his son can bring his iPad to camp. Jeanne, the new camp registrar, is polite and responds with the same answer she gives to other parents who ask about technology at camp. “We have a no screen policy, so please have him leave it at home,” she says. However, Jeanne makes sure to add a little more to her response this time: “And, by the way, thank you so much for your kind donation.” Robert’s record alerted Jeanne to his donation, an extremely important piece of information. Just a few months ago, Robert donated $50,000 to the New Gymnasium Campaign. For his gift, he received a thank you letter and calls from the Executive Director, the Development Director, and the Chairman of the Board. He was even featured in the quarterly newsletter. The donation had certainly received its fair share of recognition. But, understanding that fundraising experts suggest donors be thanked seven times for large gifts, this seemingly innocuous phone call becomes another opportunity for the camp to express its gratitude.
