Fireworks: Creating Outstanding Events
No other form of entertainment appeals to a two year old, the “cool”
teenager, mom and dad and the grandparents as much as fireworks.
Fireworks transcend all boundaries of age, religion, sex and culture.
From the small backyard get together with friends at the cottage to
huge holiday fireworks that entertain thousands of people with each
shot, fireworks can add the sparkle and fun that creates memories for
years.
There are two classes of fireworks in Canada: professional (which
requires a licensed technician and very specific safety perimeters) and
consumer. Most fireworks are
made in China. Fireworks originated in China in the 7th century
out of a desire to combine an effect for aesthetic, cultural and religious ties. It remains very popular
in China for important festivities
such as the Chinese New Year.
Other countries, such as Spain

also involved in the production of
fireworks. Japan, another producer, makes shells that are of high quality.
Technicians in Canada that work with professional fireworks are trained
through courses with the Canadian Explosives Regulatory Division.
Consumer fireworks can be purchased and used by anyone over 18,
however some areas in Canada limit their use to specific times of the
year. Be sure and ask if your area has any by-laws in this regard before
planning your fireworks display.
All fireworks in Canada must meet stringent standards before being approved for sale. Extensive testing of fireworks is done by the Canadian Explosives Research Laboratory in Ottawa. This ensures that the
fireworks that you have purchased are the most safe and reliable avail-
able in Canada. Make sure that the fireworks you purchase are authorized in Canada- there are always people looking to make a fast buck
by smuggling cheap and sometimes overloaded and unsafe fireworks
from the US. One good indicator of authorized fireworks in Canada is
to look for bilingual text on the packaging.
Consumer fireworks have come a long way from the Burning
Schoolhouse and the 10 Ball Roman Candle - the most popular item
today is the cake which is a multi-shot device that can launch a wide
variety of effects. Cakes can range in size from 9 tubes to 100 and cost
from $9.99 to $75.00.
Fireworks are easy to set up, clean up and they make your show
look professional!
Be sure and ask your fireworks vendor for some Fireworks Flares
and handles to shoot your show. They last for 15 minutes and are the
safest and easiest way to light your fireworks, just like the pros!
Speaking of pro, the same
techniques used in huge Canada Day displays and other large
events can be applied to consumer shows. In fact, consumer
fireworks are used in many situations, even by the pros when limited space prevents the use of larger and more powerful professional fireworks. These consumer
fireworks are the ones that you
can use to create the end of a
party that everyone will be talking about for days, months and maybe even years after your event!

Cake
Sometimes referred to as “repeaters” or “multi-shot aerials”,
a cake is an item that has a single fuse which is used to light
several tubes in sequence. Cakes can have a variety of intricate aerial effects, including spinners, fish, flower bouquets,
comets, crossettes, and other elements. Cakes are the most
popular consumer fireworks item.
Shell
A shell is an aerial item that is fired into the sky. The type
of stars contained inside the shell determines the effect the
shell produces in the sky.
