WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CHILE 1959
Puerto Rico finished fifth, and the consolation phase was won by the Philippines. Canada was the
principal disappointment in this group, after their (63-54) to USSR in the first phase they were
only capable of a single victory, against Mexico.
FIBA, led by William Jones, had saved face this time but as we will see in the following chapter,
they created more problems for themselves by deciding that the next edition was to be held in the
Philippines. The final image of the tournament must belong to the USSR team, they were received
in Moscow with honour by a huge crowd and were immortalised by a commemorative series of
stamps with the inscription “World Champions in Santiago de Chile”.
