Campbell Racing Team Sponsorship Proposal April, 2014 | Page 10
Racing a BMW was suggested by dad not only because of a biased love for the brand, but
also due to their reliability, solid structure, safety and of course the power which their
engines are capable of. Through his dad, he sourced a classic E30 BMW which was
prepared to race. The E30 was first run at Bushy Park in 2005 and then in the MCBI’s Rally
of the Sun and Stars using the 2.5L engine with which it came but was not really
competitive. Recently, the car was rethought and chosen specifically as a track car.
Campbell opted to run an ex- Sammy Cumberbatch 1800 M3 engine, which he took to local
engine wizard Leeson Moe to be overhauled. The E30, a popular classic race car also lost
around 200 pounds and the team made a change in tire. The work which was done made the
car a much more competitive in Group 3A as was seen in the 2010 Digicel-Williams
Industries B.A.R.L. International Race meet.
Briefly commenting on the event, Campbell noted that the overhauled car was a shocker to
him. It was to his surprise that he actually broke the barrier for the group in the qualifying
session. He admitted that he did not expect to do so well on race day but stressed that the
tussles during the day with the Irishman Barry Rabbit were fun and exciting up until his
alternator belt tore in the 3rd race. He pointed out that the next step of the car’s track
development would be in the crucial area of suspension where little has so far been done.
Midway through the time with the E30, an E46 BMW track day car was brought in to be
prepared and sold locally as a daily driver. Then the idea came to set up the E46
specifically for rallying. This was a unique choice compared to the popular choice E36, so
unique that on seeing it local motorsports commentator Robin Bradford joked that it would
make a very nice taxi. The car was first rallied using a 2.5L engine, then a problematic 3.0L
before turning to a Jonathan Still installed M3 engine. Preferring the rallying to the circuit
