Available to: 9th and 10th grade
Prerequisites: AC Science 8( 70 %- 89 %) OR MS-HS Physical Science( 70 %- 79 %)
Description: This course is designed for students to learn and understand biological functions and systems on the cellular, genetic, evolutionary, systematic, and ecological levels. This course provides students the necessary skills to be proficient in biology by focusing on the identification of patterns, processes, and relationships of living organisms. These standards include more abstract concepts such as the interdependence of organisms, the relationship of matter, energy, and organization in living systems, the behavior of organisms, and biological evolution. Students investigate biological concepts through experiences in laboratories and field work using the process of inquiry. Students will be prepared to an End-of-Course Exam.
Course Name: Honors Biology I Available to: 9th and 10th grade
Type of Course: Core Course
Prerequisites: AC Science 8( 90 %+) OR MS-HS Physical Science( 80 %+)
Description: This is an accelerated college prep course that covers all the standards included in the on-level Biology I course with a few additional standards and explores the concepts at a deeper level. This course is designed to prepare students for Advanced Placement science courses. Students will be prepared to an End-of-Course Exam. Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
Course Name: Magnet Biology I Type of Course: Core Course Available to: 9th grade( Magnet)
Prerequisites: Accepted into IB Program
Description: This is an accelerated course that includes the study of cell structures and processes, basic organic chemistry, genetics, and basic classification of organisms and a general survey of microorganisms. Emphasis is placed on laboratory investigations, scientific inquiry, use of computerized PASCO programs for lab investigation and collaborative research. Students will be prepared to an End-of- Course Exam. Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
