Campaign Analysis
What was your favorite part of campaigning ?
I loved getting to talk to everyone ! I would chat while walking to contests , lunch , or during the long trek back to my dorm . Even if I forgot to hand out a flyer or two , I loved being able to make that connection with someone and have a good impression , ‘ cause that ’ s equally as important . Also , JCLers are the nicest people ever so it ’ s just fun to talk and meet people !
What would you have done differently ?
I think I would have had a slightly bigger poster for Meet the Candidates . Mine was half of a poster that was folded and taped to a ruler so make it stand . While I still love my little poster , I think that a bigger one would allow for more information and would be a little more visible and sturdy .
What tips do you have for speaking to people and / or giving your speeches ?
Speaking to people : Getting to talk to JCLers is the best ! Just know that they love Latin , Greek , and the Classics just like you do . You can always start the conversation about those things or ask where they are going ! In addition if you feel a little scared , walk around with a friend or someone in your delegation for support !
Giving your speech : I like to print out my speech so that I can catch and edit the little things that are hard for me to say when I practice . Also , saying a speech can be scary so I take a deep breath ! It ’ s important to know that all the JCLers support the candidates even if they mess up and want to hear what they have to say . If you ’ re scared , find your delegation and give your speech to them !
If nothing else , what tip should they take away ?
Have fun ! Campaigning and running for office is a big task , but it ' s really rewarding . While it may be scary , have fun because running is an amazing experience with some amazing people around you like your fellow candidates , your delegation and sponsors , and the JCL community . If you ’ re stressed , take a breath and find support in those people !
