Letter from the Parliamentarian
Salve !
The idea of running for national office might seem daunting . When my Latin teacher first suggested that I run for NJCL Parliamentarian , I was really hesitant and didn ’ t feel that I was qualified for the task . Nevertheless , here I am , creating this very Campaign Corner for aspiring candidates like you .
So if I , a bundle of nervousness navigating my first in-person Convention , can run for office , then you can absolutely do it . Just by opening this Campaign Corner , you ' ve already shown that you have an above-average interest in the world of classics and the initiative to learn more about JCL — two qualities characteristic of an NJCL officer .
Win or not , campaigning for NJCL office will be one of the most fun , exhilarating , and occasionally nerve-wracking experiences you ' ll ever have . You ’ ll meet so many new people and become a well known figure in JCL . You ’ ll have so many great discussions , some about your campaign and some not . You ’ ll share fun moments with your fellow candidates , and you ’ ll feel the rush of putting your ideas forward at election events .
The theme for this year ’ s NJCL Convention ( which is also the theme of this Campaign Corner ) puts it aptly :
Multa , quae impedita natura sunt , consilio expediuntur . ( Many things which are naturally difficult are solved by ingenuity .)
Running for NJCL office can be challenging . Between coming up with a platform , creating materials , delivering speeches , and discussing your ideas , it certainly takes a lot of effort . But with a bit of ingenuity , you can make a campaign that you ’ ll be proud of and that JCLers from across the country will love .
So if you ’ ve attended even one NJCL Convention ( virtually or in-person ) and have the slightest bit of interest in giving back to JCL , I encourage you to read on . Because again , if I can do it , you can definitely do it .
Lectionem felicem tibi ago !
