INDUSTRY PEOPLE At this time of his career, Paul didn’t have a master plan, as such. As we will see though, he had an incredibly strong work ethic, and he now puts this down to having a vision, rather than a “get rich quick” mentality. “Off the back of Superwinch and a couple of other well- respected brands such as Lewis Winch and Lodar, my focus has been commercial applications for winches.” After a while, though, other opportunities started to trickle in. Another somewhat niche market, the towing industry, has more technological quirks than the average person might realise, as does the heavy haulage sector. Some of us older folks might remember the days when a tow truck would turn up with the old-school flashing lights. They’d rock up to the scene and load the vehicle onto the deck (or whatever towing situation had presented). The towie had to safely carry out all of this while perhaps on a busy road, or highway; in any case over time, safety precautions have changed so much so, that now up to three different types of lights are sometimes needed. This is where the lightbars come in. Lightbars are generally ComeUp winches have something for everyone, no matter how large or small. LED in presentation and serve various purposes, and there’s a wireless option. Gone are the days of being unable to signal to the traffic in behind you what you’re doing, without getting out of the cab. Elsewhere, Paul has also begun handling clients who are switching to wireless radio remote controls. “I’ve handled Lodar from the UK and Apollo from Taiwan for many years and more recently taking on world leaders, NBB Controls, out of Germany. Their range is comprehensive from simple push-button, through to the most complex fully proportional systems, all built to superior standards. “Dealing in quality products has always been my focus, to represent a company offering such a mature technology is extremely satisfying and I see this area of industry as offering prospects for the future growth of Traxion.” Superwinch is a staple brand at Traxion, and is the world’s most popular electric winch. While these various iterations of the business were established and consolidated, Paul was also involved in the four-wheel-drive enthusiast industry. The business is no longer focussed on this sector, but at the time, there were some interesting developments taking place. w w w. c a m m a g a z i n e . c o . n z CAM April 2020  65
