Calligraphy and graphic design 2 Where does my inspiration come from? It can come from anywhere, be it a crack in a wall, a flower, a fly on my computer screen, a drop of ink… I like to be closely connected to nature, through stillness one discovers so much beauty everywhere! My designs are essentially calligraphies but also sketches and drawings that I elaborate later on, using Photoshop or Illustrator. Nowadays, technology dominates the graphic design industry, but I hardly ever directly create a design on the computer, I feel the need to do it the old fashioned way, with a pencil, a pen or a brush, some ink or watercolor and a sheet of paper. I think the computer can’t replace the beauty of a hand drawing. I don’t like to be put in a single category, so I continuously try out new techniques and disciplines. I graduated from the Luca Art School in Ghent, Belgium, where I have studied applied arts for 4 years. I discovered calligraphy at school, thanks to Jef Boudens, a famous Belgian artist who passed away many years ago. He has been an inspiration to me. He was the one who introduced me to the famous French calligrapher Claude Mediavilla’s work. After my studies, I moved to Paris, where I worked in Mediavilla’s studio for more than fourteen years. I like to explore many creative fields, including typography, illustration, layout, etchings and monotypes. I design logotypes, brands, posters, book covers, letterheads, business cards, flyers, catalogs, etc. I work for companies as well as for private individuals. I also have three online shops on RedBubble, Society6, and TeePublic. These websites sell awesome products created by independent artists.
