In the Prime of Life
Their year back in the states, 1969 – 1970, was a challenging one with the antiwar protests and civil
rights struggles. These struggles confirmed to them that those with no hope and no Scripture demanded
their devotion and dedication.
There were plenty of fun times on furlough as Vonnie and the family returned to Wisconsin to enjoy
family and the winter weather. There was time for skiing and skating and hiking along the shores of Lake
Michigan, and time to visit her grandfather’s farm in Cedar Grove, Wisconsin. Walt was able to take a
course in Hebrew at Wheaton College and they visited family in Arizona. Too soon it was time to say
good bye and head back to New Guinea.
