Dear Reader,
Welcome to the inaugural edition of Behind the Badge, a
magazine dedicated to the men and women who keep our
streets safe.
In this edition, you will meet some of California’s most highly
regarded law enforcement leaders, including Fremont Police
Chief Craig Steckler, who is in line to influence the world’s
police leaders when he takes over next year as president of the
International Association of Police Chiefs.
You will also meet women leaders such as Diane Urban, the new police chief in Hayward, who is emblematic
of a rising number of women securing top law enforcement jobs. Ask Diane and she’ll tell you that gender is a
periphery factor when it comes to leadership. Also inside is a story about how two cities bucked the economic
trend by investing in new police departments. The result? Lower crime rates and happier citizens.
We hope you enjoy the magazine. It’s the latest in a number of communications tools the California Police Chiefs
Association is using to spread the word about the value and values of municipal law enforcement.
Please visit our news site at www.calchiefsnews.org or follow us on Facebook or Twitter at Cal Chiefs to join
the conversation.
We welcome your feedback - and your story ideas. Working together, we will ensure California remains one of the
best and safest places in the world to live, work and recreate.
Sincerely,
David L. Maggard, Jr.
President of the Board
California Police Chiefs Association
