POLICING IS JUST ONE PART OF OUR JOBS By Chief Corey Sianez, Buena Park Police Department, CPCA Legislative Committee Chair W hen you made the decision to become peace officer, did you ever think you would also be advocating for public policy? Did you ever imagine you would have to call your state representatives and urge them to vote a certain way on a bill? Did you ever think your voice would carry such weight and influence outside your jurisdiction? Probably not. When you took the oath as a peace officer, you swore to protect your community from any dangers that may present themselves – not advocate on behalf of the law enforcement community to the State Legislature. The reality, however, is that now, more than ever, we need you to be that advocate. Law enforcement is facing some tough issues this year and they are going to take everything we have to overcome. This year, we are facing major legislation regarding use-of-force (AB 931), disclosure of personnel records (SB 1421) and surveillance tactics (SB 1186) and the further reduction in penalty enhancements (SB 1393, SB 1392, and SB 1279). Each of these bills will put your officers and communities at greater risk, and the only way we stop them is through our collective advocacy. 10 California Police Chief | www.californiapolicechiefs.org As chiefs of police, you have a credible and respected voice that resonates with members of your community. Your years of experience and public trust are what made you a prominent public figure. What you say and what you do has an impact on what people think and how they view policing in your community. Furthermore, regardless of your jurisdiction, your voice can also hold influence outside of your community. Some of you are experts on marijuana enforcement, use-of-force standards, pensions, mental health and firearms. Because you are the experts on these important issues, policy-makers in Sacramento, whether it be politicians, political consultants, or organizations, look to you for your expert opinion. Your experience and knowledge is Cal Chiefs’ greatest advantage.
