Golden West FFA
Western Week
Submitted by Hannah Seymore
This year we held our Annual Sweetheart dinner on Friday, March 13th. This dinner is the biggest
fundraiser for our chapter. In mid-February our members began nominating peers that they wanted to run
for Sweetheart King and Queen. The candidates all had to go through certain requirements in order for
them to be eligible for the crown. These requirements include taking a test about the FFA and participating
in Western Week. Western Week is a week full of school wide activities that our chapter puts on
every year. The chapter officers pick unique dress up ideas for the week that included Dynamic Duo
Monday, Tracker Tuesday, Wacky Wednesday, Camouflage Thursday, and FFA Friday. These dress up
days coordinate with lunch time activities that range from an obstacle course to trying to catch water in a
cup from a water truck. Not only are these activities fun for the entire school but it also helps to promote
our chapter. We had a record 19 teams sign up this year and participated in the lunchtime activities. Each
candidate also goes out to get as many donations for our chapter as they can. This year we had over 50
silent auction items that included student built fire pits and BBQ’s. This year our chapter raised a grand total
of $13,000 in donations that will go towards helping our chapter to finish of the year and start the next.
Ferndale FFA
Granting Hands On Learning
Submitted by Bailey Coutts
Because of the Agricultural Incentive Grant, Ferndale has been able to not only update
their agricultural mechanics shop with new technology and a new commercial kitchen, but
was additionally able to provide a livestock trailer. The grant also provided our chapter
with a new ventilation and irrigation system for our greenhouse. One of our main goals
of purchasing this new equipment with funds from the state grant is to enable our students
to learn how to grow their own food as well as provide healthy fruits and vegetables
for our school lunch program. Ferndale FFA is so excited to announce that this year we
have had record participation with 25 kids showing at the Humboldt County Fair varying
from steers, lambs, market hogs, turkeys, chickens, rabbits, goats, dairy cattle as well as
home grown fruits and vegetables! Also, come March, we had seven recipients receive
the golden charm of the State FFA Degree. Additionally, twenty extravagant Ferndale
FFA kids were present at State Convention and are ready to ‘Reach Out.’ We were also
very proud of Corabelle Esmailian who represented the North Coast Region on the State
Nominating Committee. It is quite an honor to be selected and we know she had an extremely difficult job, but did it very well! Because of the Agriculture Incentive
Grant, our students have been empowered to learn with their hands, grow as leaders, and achieve success!
