PRO HUNTING : TWO FOR THE GOOD GUYS

BEST SPORTSMEN ’ S BILL WINNER : Virginia Sunday Hunting — After hundreds of years , sportsmen can hunt on Sundays in Virginia . Any time you can remove a barrier to hunting , it ’ s a good thing . When you can open an entire state to hunting for an extra day every week for resident and nonresident hunters , it ’ s cause for celebration .
RUNNER UP : Kansas and Colorado Hunter Ed in Schools — Both states implemented laws that allow the teaching of hunter education in public schools , a small but important step to pushing back against creeping social norms eroding our outdoor traditions .
BEST PUBLIC OFFICIAL WINNER : Congressional Western Caucus — When the Sportsmen ’ s Alliance rang the alarm bell concerning settlement talks between the U . S . Fish and Wildlife Service and Center for Biological Diversity , the 33-member caucus joined the fight and expressed concern to Director Martha Williams over the talks and tactics . That first letter was later echoed by 27 senators voicing the same concerns .
RUNNER UP : Commissioner Kim Thorburn — A non-hunter , Thorburn has stood in the breach for Washington state hunters , pushing back against fellow game commissioners and Gov . Jay Inslee in both meetings and the media .
