Calhoun's Miscellany

Elise McCray:

- The Poly-Olbion, the poetry of which describes the topography of England and Wales as well as its history, was also supposed to have a third section describing Scotland, no known copy of which has survived. Original copies of the Poly-Olbion also contained detailed maps of the regions being described in the poems.

Peter Dewitt:

Samuel Daniel's Sonnet XVII I found in a small and remarkably well preserved book, with very thin pages not unlike a King James Bible you'd find in a hotel desk drawer, and with a golden sheen on the page edges like the same. I read a few of the poems, and I liked, in a cynical way maybe, this poem about chasing someone who is hard to get, with insightful speculation on the push and pull nature of relationships.

Note on “To Penshurst”

“To Penshurst, a country house poem” was composed by Ben Jonson at the estate of Sir Phillip Sydney. It is a patronage poem addressed to Sir Robert Sydney and the Penshurst Estate. Typically, houses were built in the country during this time period as a display of wealth, Jonson’s poem emphasizes the humbleness and ultimately sets up an opposition between the city and the country.

Angela Vaudreuil:

The Faerie Queene was published in two segments: first published in 1590 (Books I-III) and then in 1596 (Books IV-VI) so readers had to wait 6 years for the resolution of The Faerie Queene.

Note about X. from Astrophel and Stella by Sir Philip Sidney

Astrophel and Stella was first published in 1591 after being circulated in manuscript form. It was published by Thomas Newman without the permission of Sidney’s family or the Stationer’s Company. The book’s first edition was seized, but Newman was later given a second chance to print it, and the second edition remained.

Stephanie Hendren:

From: “Platonick Love,” from Poems by John Hall

Born in 1627, Hall is considered a minor poet in this time period, as well as a metaphysical poet. Metaphysical poets are a group whose focuses on topics such as love and religion. He first published at the age of nineteen, which were good enough make himself famous. He also wrote political pieces as he was against the monarchy.
