where the race course was located. There were there for almost two hours until a smooth breeze began to blow at 6 to 8 knots. The first boats started, but halfway along the route the wind stopped completely and the Committee suspended the trial.
Everyone had to wait another hour to start again. There was little wind, but it was enough to at least try once more.
The “Ironbound”, that began the round as the leader, together with “Team Aqua” were the only ones that positioned themselves on the right side at the start, but would finish on the wrong side. The first lap with little wind would end up marking the transformation for the rest of the race. The “Team Italia” would surprise everyone and was the first to arrive at the windward buoy, followed by the Russian “Bronenosec”
and the “Peninsula Petroleum” from Gibraltar. The two Puerto Calero boats took 13th and 14th and the “Ironbound” the last position.
In the first downwind leg “Team Italia” was able to maintain the lead and also make up some distance from “Bronenosec”, while the French “Aleph Racing” recovered three spots and moved up from sixth to third position.
