RELIGIOUS STUDIES
This major is designed for students who wish to become
acquainted with the essential teachings, beliefs, and
ethical outlooks of one or more of the world’s major

religious traditions. It offers students an opportunity to
prepare for a profession for which knowledge of religious
thought, practices, and traditions may be important,
including fields like human services and international
diplomacy. The major requires completion of an undergraduate thesis. Students enroll in a variety of courses
including “Judaism,” “Christianity,” “Islam,” “Hinduism,”
“Buddhism in Southeast Asia,” “Native American
Religions,” and “African Religions.” Electives within the
major cover a wide range of topics, including: “Religion
in America,” “Shamanism, Trance, and Sacred Journey,”
