Pearl Toh interview with Pearl Toh of Pearl’s Creations has made a name for herself in the Australian cake industry for her handcrafted sugar figurines. Her simple, clean-cut style lends itself to a wide variety of wedding, birthday, and other celebration cakes. Written by Kellie Rudland We sat down with Pearl to chat about how she began her business and what’s next for her. with me, giving me free reign on the design. That order brought my next order with a guest at that party, and then it just snowballed. What are your favourite tools for modelling? You’ve always been a crafty person. How did you get in to cake decorating? A girlfriend encouraged me to try it out, said I’d be good at it. I decided, after producing hardly edible cakes with decorations made by others two years in a row for my daughter’s birthdays, to take the plunge and learn how to decorate cupcakes and make a figurine. Immediately after the classes, a friend placed an order My water brush, blade tool and metal ball tools are my all-time favourite tools. I’d say they are my essential tools. Do you use anything unconventional in place of traditional modelling tools? My hands, tips of my fingers and sides of my palms are often used to model the figurines.
