Who inspires you?
I’ m so inspired by so many people / things. I get inspired by other decorators who push me to get better like Natalie Sideserf, Mike McCarey and Karen Portaleo. I get inspired by sculptors and artists like Forrest Rogers, Spiderzero and Glenn Arthur. Mostly I am constantly inspired by the world around me. Nature, fashion, jewellery and Pinterest! Oh, how I love Pinterest.
What advice do you have to cakers wishing to expand their sculpting skills?
If you truly want to learn how to be a better sculptor, you absolutely must take a live drawing class or research anatomy. You can’ t sculpt something that you don’ t have an understanding of and you cannot correct your mistakes unless you can see them. Working from reference is extremely important whether it’ s an anatomy model or your own face in the mirror. If you talk to any sculptor, they will tell you the same. We’ re all just sculptors who happen to work in sugar instead of clay, so the same principles apply.
You spent some time here in Australia in 2016 teaching. Do you have any plans to return?
Australia is an amazing place! I never knew I would enjoy it so much and would love to return when my daughter is a little older so she can really appreciate the wonders we experienced! We camped a lot when I was a kid and spent a lot of time exploring nature and going to museums and I feel like that really shaped me as a person. I definitely want to give Avalon the same experiences. more information
