Cake Chat with Amber Comadira-Smith from Commie ’ s Cupcakes
Amber shares her design & cake expertise so that you can become the master cake decorator you ’ ve always wanted to be !
I REGULARLY HAVE PEOPLE SHOPPING AROUND FOR CAKE QUOTES AND MOST OF THE TIME I GET ASKED ABOUT WHAT OTHER CAKE DECORATORS ARE IN TOWN AND WHO ELSE I WOULD RECOMMEND FOR CAKES . THIS ANNOYS ME AND I DON ’ T KNOW HOW TO POLITELY DECLINE ANSWERING . I DON ’ T WANT TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO GO TO MY COMPETITORS . WHAT WOULD YOU DO ? - PATTY
What would I do ? Happily recommend three other talented cake decorators that they can source quotes from .
When I entered into my cake business , I chose to embrace my “ competitors ” as my friends and build a support network .
It was absolutely wonderful - we could freely ask each other for advice without judgement and I ’ ve witnessed so many selfless acts of kindness .
So in addition to asking for advice , we would lend each other tools and moulds for those one-off cakes .
When one of my cake friends was feeling unwell and couldn ’ t possibly get her cake orders finished , I witnessed another decorator step-up and finish those cakes for her ( at no charge ).
And next week ? Myself and 5 other cake decorators will be helping a cookie maker to finish her huge orders for Christmas .
In my little local cake community , we want to empower each other , provide support and see each other succeed in business . We each have our own niche , unique talents and different target audiences . There are plenty of customers to go around ....
I suppose what I ’ m saying is - embrace opportunities to reach out and support others in your industry . The more you give , the more you attract .
