WINTER 2017 evacuation came , White said , there were only a few people in the park .
“ There were a few days with really heavy smoke , but the wind patterns shifted it around so that some days it was worse in other areas ,” she said . “ Overall , the biggest impression from the fire was that it was a community effort to stop it . Everybody banded together amidst a very hectic and trying time .”
While the fires are out , there are still ways for the community surrounding the Gorge to help out , Hartzog said .
“ People have been asking how they can help ,” he said . “ One of the main things they can do is to visit the area and have lunch . Or , better yet , stay overnight . That would boost everybody ’ s spirits more than anything .”
Many businesses in the area have returned to normal winter operating hours , and Chimney Rock is offering programming throughout the winter months as well . Air quality is back to green , and hikes around the waterfall and rock are open . The climbing access off Rumbling Bald , White said , will remain closed until forestry officials can make sure the area is safe . “ We are open for business ,” she said .
