The idea for the Serafina Book Series book grew from Beatty’s love of writing stories for his daughters and from the rich history and beauty of Western North Carolina, particularly the forests of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Biltmore. Although it was written for middlegrade students, Serafina’s mix of historical fiction, fantasy, adventure and mystery makes it appealing to adult readers as well. Since its nationwide release in July, Serafina and the Black Cloak has been on the bestsellers lists of the New York Times (20 weeks), Publisher’s Weekly, USA TODAY, Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
