Summer 2015
The Stunning Madelyn Grecco
World Champion Bodypaint Artist
Café Spanglish is
proud to spotlight the
amazing artist who
created the painting
for our Cover, Madelyn
Grecco!! based in NC
she is a 5 time World
Champion Bodypaint
Artist.
Madelyn and her fiancé
Scott Fray are the CoFounders of Living Art
America - The North
American Bodypainting Championships. This
beautiful and talented lady took some time out of
her busy schedule to talk with us about her art.
Café S: What is body painting?
Madelyn: Body painting is an art form dating back
to the beginnings of human history. Decorations
created with handmade pigments on skin to
mark life events, rites of passage and define
tribal identity, are part of the long human story.
The modern expression of the bodypainting
movement can be tied to the 17-year history
of the World Bodypainting Festival created in
Austria, which now draws over 200 artists from
50 countries to compete each year for the title of
the world’s best.
Café S: How did you become a body painter?
Madelyn: I met Scott Fray, not because I was
interested in becoming a painter, but merely
because I was interested in being painted.
But our introduction was a fateful one, after
that initial, bodypaint session at an outdoor
festival, I soon picked up a brush and we
began to paint,,together; 11 years & 5 World
Championships later, it seems I made a good
choice! We will be,married this July 5th, on the
Main Stage in the middle of the final day of The
4
By Maribell Sarate
World Bodypainting,Festival.
Café S: Where has body painting taken you?
Madelyn: My own journey with bodypainting
has quite possibly been more fortuitous than
anyone’s. Scott’s and my competition career is
the most distinguished of any artists in modern
bodypainting’s history. Thanks to this, we are
honored both together and individually to travel
the world. We are invited to speak and teach
internationally about bodypainting and also
to judge competitions. Additionally, I am the
emcee/mistress of ceremonies for Living Art
America: The North American Bodypainting
Championships and was also just invited to fulfill
the same role at FABAIC: Face and Body Art
International Convention, 2015.
Café S: What are your major achievements as a
body painter?
Madelyn: In 2007 Scott and I set a Guinness
World Record for “most bodies painted” (264
people in one day) that record stood for a number
of years. In 2010, we got into competition,
taking third in the North American Bodypainting
Championships in Las Vegas & then amazingly,
second place at the World Bodypainting Festival
in Austria, in the Brush and Sponge Category.
In 2011, we won the Brush & Sponge Category
at the North American Championships, held
that year in
Dallas, Texas
and returned
with high hopes
to the World
Bodypainting
Festival. At
the end of the
competition we
stood at the front
of the stage,
