URGENT PROJECTS
NEPAL | 100,000 ACRES TO PROTECT
Safeguard a Himalayan Wilderness
Rugged and largely inaccessible, the Himalayas are a series of four parallel mountain ranges rising up one after the other, from hills and lowlands to the greatest peaks in the world. Between these two extremes is the middlemountains region of western Nepal, where elevated pasturelands, lakes, and conifer, broadleaf, and pine forests shelter more than 200 species of birds, mammals, and butterflies, including the Endangered Alpine Musk Deer. The Endangered West Himalayan Yew— which has been over-collected almost to the point of extinction because it is one of the only wild sources for the anti-cancer drug, Taxol ®— is also found here.
Together with our partner, National Trust for Nature Conservation, we are working to establish the Badimalika-Ramaroshan Highlands Forest Conservation Area. This will protect 100,000 acres of essential habitat from commercial exploitation through logging, hunting, and mining.
