PROTECTED ACRES
PROTECTED ACRES
With your help, we and our partners safeguarded essential acres for critically endangered pangolins, Endangered Tigers, Clouded Leopards, and other threatened species throughout Asia and the Pacific.
INDIA | 42,135 ACRES PROTECTED, WITH MORE TO COME Conserving Biodiverse Protected Areas in the Western Ghats
Stretching almost 1,000 miles along India’ s western coast, the peaks and valleys of the Western Ghats support more than 30 percent of the country’ s mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, fish, and plant species, many of which are endemic. The region is also home to a robust population of Endangered Tigers and approximately one-quarter of the world’ s wild Endangered Asian Elephants.
This diversity is increasingly threatened by encroaching human development, illegal logging, poaching, mining, and more. To preserve these species and the habitat they rely upon, we worked with local partner WCS-India to establish the 35,227-acre Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary Eco-Sensitive Zone and expand the existing Bhadra Tiger Reserve by 6,908 acres. However, our work in the Western Ghats is not yet complete. This remains an active project, with additional protections still to come.
