ANGOLA | 3,150,000 ACRES TO PROTECT
Save the Angola Highlands Watershed, Source of the Astounding Okavango Delta
The trillions of gallons of rain falling on Angola’ s central plateau create what is known as the Highlands Water Tower, feeding 11 river basins and 7 mighty rivers in Southern Africa. These waters are especially important for maintaining an oasis in the Kalahari Desert to the south called the Okavango Delta, which serves as a lifeline for hundreds of species of birds and mammals as well as for 1 million people. Critically Endangered White-backed Vultures, Endangered Bateleur eagles, Endangered African Savanna Elephants and Endangered Wild Dogs, and Vulnerable Cheetahs and African Lions all depend on the delta’ s flood-born grasslands and year-round waterholes. The Angola Highlands watershed region contains a high degree of endemism, and an estimated 200 undescribed species.
With generous support from donors like you, Rainforest Trust is partnering with Fundação Lisima to establish five Community Conservation Areas to preserve this critical ecosystem and safeguard 3.15 million acres that overlap with the traditional domains of local communities. This effort extends a higher level of protection to 250,000 acres of source lakes and sacred forests within the intact Miombo woodlands as part of its community-based landscape management.
