SaSkatoon’S neweSt cultural destination is
set to take the art world by storm. The Remai
Modern, a contemporary art gallery on the
banks of the South Saskatchewan River, recently
opened with a permanent collection of Picasso
linocut prints. The museum boasts 11 galleries
and a permanent collection of 8,000 works,
including 405 Picassos—the largest collection of
his linocuts in the world. Even if you don’t know
your Cubism from a comic book, the Remai is

worth a look. Admission to the light-filled atrium
is free and the main-floor space was designed
to be a sort of living room for the city: Relax in
front of the long fireplace, grab a drink in the
restaurant or browse books in the gift shop.
Named for local philanthropist Ellen Remai, the
four-storey art hub features a cantilevered space
to enjoy the river view, as well as a mesh copper
exterior—a nod to Saskatoon’s landmark 1932
Bessborough Hotel. —Jennifer Allford
