During the spring of
1940, 400,000 Allied
troops were cornered
on this French beach
by advancing German
forces. Between May 26
and June 4, a massive
evacuation effort
sent a flotilla of 222
ships, including four
Royal Canadian Navy
destroyers. “Operation
Dynamo,” as it was
known, also saw more
than 700 civilian
vessels, like fishing boats
and pleasure crafts,
come to the rescue of
the trapped British,
French and Be
