The Road to Love
How romance blossomed aboard a motorcoach
during a westworld tours adventure
by Lona Gervais
LuciLLe Wiebe and Keith eLhart’s
eyes first met on a WestWorld Tours
Solo tour to Victoria. Little did they
know that a few months later, they’d
be engaged.
After the tragic passing of their
respective spouses, Lucille from
Saskatchewan and Albertan Keith
found themselves alone for the first
time in many years.
Lucille was apprehensive about
travelling alone, but after talking
to CAA Travel Consultant Rachel
Souter at the CAA Regina East Store,
she decided to take the leap on the
WestWorld Tours Victoria Solo tour.
Meanwhile, Keith was originally
scheduled to travel elsewhere, but fate
intervened: An unexpected change
in his plans led him to book the same
Victoria tour, through AMA Travel
(Alberta Motor Association) counsellor
Lori Niwa in Medicine Hat.
When they met on the tour, the
attraction was immediate. And it didn’t
go unnoticed: Tour director Debbie
MacRae saw sparks fly right away. The
couple quickly got to know each other
as they journeyed from stop to stop.
At the end of the trip, Lucille and
Keith exchanged contact information
and promised to keep in touch, which
they did. Over the summer, the friend-
ship turned to love. And by the end
of the season, the pair was talking
marriage and shopping for rings.
That fall, they booked WestWorld
Tours’ Maritimes Fly & Coach tour.
While in Ottawa, Keith dropped to one
knee to present Lucille with a dazzling
ring—she said yes!
Tour directors MacRae and Pat
Larocque gave the happy couple a bottle
of champagne. And Pat’s announcement
to the rest of the tour group was met
with resounding applause.
After the bubbles settled, Lucille
and Keith continued their romantic
engagement tour of the Maritimes.
The pair soaked in all the sights across
Ontario, New Brunswick, Quebec,
Nova Scotia and Prince Edward
Island. “We adored seeing
the old buildings and the
cobblestone streets in
Quebec City,” Lucille
says. “That city and
Niagara-on-the-Lake
were our favourite
destinations.”
Their visit to Pier 21
in Halifax was another
unforgettable moment. From
1928 to 1971, the pier was an ocean
liner terminal and immigration
shed. It’s the last surviving seaport
immigration facility in Canada, and
visitors can search the ship arrival
database to discover family connec-
tions. Lucille located the record of her
own mother’s arrival in 1928, as an
eight-year-old arriving from Poland
with her family.
As they reflected on the past, the
couple couldn’t help but anticipate
their future. While no date has been
set yet, Keith and Lucille are excited
about exchanging “I do’s!”
