by the way It can be easy to forget that Saskatchewan stretches out for tens of thousands of square kilometres above “northern” cities like Saskatoon and Prince Albert. And though not many of us will get to extensively survey the vast expanse (much of the region is accessible only by floatplane or canoe), just knowing that it exists, rugged and pristine, is enough to conjure provincial pride. For adventurers, however, Hunt Falls is one Canadian Shield attraction that’s worth some 50 spring 2019 CAA sAsKATCHEWAn effort to visit. The cascade is Saskatchewan’s largest, with water from a 60-metre-wide section of the Grease River plunging 15 metres before flowing onward to Lake Athabasca, about 100 kilometres west. Fly-in explorers can get up close to experience the thunderous roar, gaze out over the tropical-seeming mist meadow fed by the falls’ constant spray, and maybe even spot a few winged wonders: Bald eagles make their eyries in the surrounding cliffs. —Craig Moy FALLING FOR THE NORTH
