It can be easy to forget that
Saskatchewan
stretches out for tens of thousands of square
kilometres above “northern” cities like Saskatoon
and Prince Albert. And though not many of us will
get to extensively survey the vast expanse (much
of the region is accessible only by floatplane or
canoe), just knowing that it exists, rugged and
pristine, is enough to conjure provincial pride.
For adventurers, however, Hunt Falls is one
Canadian Shield attraction that’s worth some

effort to visit. The cascade is Saskatchewan’s
largest, with water from a 60-metre-wide section
of the Grease River plunging 15 metres before
flowing onward to Lake Athabasca, about 100
kilometres west. Fly-in explorers can get up close
to experience the thunderous roar, gaze out over
the tropical-seeming mist meadow fed by the falls’
constant spray, and maybe even spot a few winged
wonders: Bald eagles make their eyries in the
surrounding cliffs. —Craig Moy
