One of the finest surviving examples of medieval Scottish architecture , Borthwick hosted Mary , Queen of Scots on two occasions — a friendly visit in 1563 and again in 1567 , during the turmoil that led to her forced abdication .
In 2013 , a multimillion-dollar renovation transformed the castle into a luxury retreat . While the reno added much-needed modern amenities , restorers thoughtfully designed the space to respect its 600-year legacy .
Borthwick accommodates up to 80 guests in its majestic Great Hall , which can be adapted for a lavish royal banquet , as well as afterdinner dancing and cocktails . Several winding staircases above , the Garrison provides a dramatic yet cozy space for exchanging vows .
