It was the last day of vacation when Jim was packing his schoolbag to school. Then, Jim was thirteen
and he was from a rather poor family. He was afraid, because of the new school: ‘Will they accept
me?’ – he thought. The first day at school was a normal day. Everyone wore a shirt, so Jim wasn’t
outstanding. He hadn’t thought, that everything is going to change. The next day, when he entered the
school building, he felt disappointed. He saw children with the newest iPhones and their brand clothes.
He was wearing a cheap hoodie, old jeans and no-name shoes. Everyone was laughing at him except
one girl. At this moment, I have to say, that he was quite handsome. Lisa was looking at him
differently than others. Of course, they tried to convince her, that he’s a poor beggar, but she didn’t
listen. She wanted to help him. A day before Christmas Eve, Jim went to the shopping centre to buy
some gifts for his family. He has earned money by giving people leaflets for about a year. In the shop,
a boy called Marian broke Jim’s jar with money on purpose. Jim had to pick up the money from the
floor. At the time, Lisa was shopping with her friends. She saw him, and she felt worried. At
Christmas Eve, Jim’s family gathered around the table and started praying, when someone knocked the
door. Boy’s mum opened the door and greeted Lisa warmly. Then, she gave a small wrapped box to
Jim. ‘I know, you’ve always dreamed about it’ – she said happily. Jim unwrapped the present and he
couldn’t believe his eyes. That was an iPhone… Now, Jim lives in a new, modern house. Lisa’s
parents employed Jim’s father in their company. And what happened to Jim? He doesn’t want to look
like others. He has his own style, and he just wants to feel comfortable. But the most important is a
fact that Jim and Lisa are together.
'You don't have to be worried, that you're poor.'
I have written this story after watching a poignant video on YouTube. I didn’t search for it. It appeared
on the card ‘On Time’.
