Dear Remnants,
Greetings to you in the name of our Lord and
Saviour Jesus Christ!
What pleasure it is to share with you what
the Lord burdens me through this letter each
month!
Hope you have noticed the phenomenal
increase in the number of preachers these days.
Though it is welcome news, it is sad to note that
not many lead an exemplary life and practice
what they preach. Many a times, the Word of God
is compromised and adulterated for personal
gains and popularity (2 Cor 2:17). Since they call
themselves as 'servants of God', many sheep in
the Shepherd's fold are led astray. Christ Himself
and the Apostles have repeatedly warned about
such preachers in the Holy Scriptures - Mt 24:11,
1 Tim 1:3, 2 Pet 2:1, Jud 3-4.
Being flooded with false doctrines, the best
way to defend ourselves is to be like the Bereans
“Now these Jews were more noble than those in
Thessalonica; they received the word with all
eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if
these things were so” (Acts 17:10, 11). They not
only received the Word with all eagerness, but
they did a personal homework to check whether
what has been preached was really in the
Scripture. This made them to be more noble. The
reason why people simply accept whatever is
preached from the pulpit is because, they don't
spend sufficient time in studying and meditating
God's Word and do not verify what is preached
with the Bible. The Bible admonishes us to search
from the Book of the Lord and read. Not one will
fail and not one will lack her mate (Is 34:16).
Meditation and systematic study of the
Scriptures should be our daily practice. If we
chose only certain books and chapters for Bible
meditation, we will miss the whole counsel of God
and will be dwarfed in our spiritual life. Such
person is unskilled to the word of righteousness
for he is a babe who cannot discern both good and
evil (Heb 5:13-14). Apostle Paul in his epistle to
the Thessalonians advises us to “test all things
and hold fast to what is good” (1 Thes 5:21). What
is preached should be examined with other
passages of the Scripture whether they agree or
not. It is said, “Scripture interprets Scripture”
and the Bible is the best commentary for the
Bible.
If the preaching or teachings are not based
on His word and is purely on visions, dreams,
individual experiences and fables, it should not
be accepted (2 Tim 4 : 3-4). A reference to
Jeremiah 23 : 28-29 is appropriate “Let the
prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let
him who has my word speak my word faithfully.
What has straw in common with wheat? declares
the Lord.”
To escape all these evils and stand before
the Son of Man, let us give ourselves to the study
and meditation of His Word. Maranatha!
Yours in His Service,
A. Lionel
