Little Flock And Great Victory
A. Lionel
All of us desire to do something great for God. But
when we don't find 'big crowds' in our meetings, we
tend to get discouraged. This is one of Satan's master
tactics to paralyze us. If we believe in the following
promise of Jesus, we will never lose heart:
Luk 12:32 - “Do not be afraid, little flock, for
your Father has been pleased to give you the
Kingdom!”
History reveals that the Lord has used small
groups to achieve great things. A small group may
apparently be weak and powerless. But with God's
help, this minuscule will do valiantly.
Power of Small Groups
What is this small group? It is the “two or
three” coming together in Jesus' name! (Mt 18:19). It
is not even five. Just two or three!
We long for crowds. We are often disappointed
when just one or two turn up for prayer. We expect
our prayer group to expand with the addition of
newcomers every week. Our aspiration is good. But
if we let disappointment overtake us when that
doesn't happen, we lose sight of what the two or three
can achieve. I would like to draw your attention to
four such small groups in the Bible.
1. Daniel and his friends
This small but strong group existed in the city
of Babylon. They did not go unnoticed in that thickly
populated city, for they literally shook the city. They
were just four members but were deeply dedicated to
God. They stood for holiness and refused to
compromise. They would not touch anything that
might defile them. They were captives from
Jerusalem but would not partake in the royal food
and wine (1:8). While the other young men who
came with them enjoyed the delicacies of the palace
and revelled in the roasts, the fussy four preferred
sambar (An ordinary Indian dish!) and vegetables.
When king Nebuchadnezzar dedicated a
gigantic idol of gold and commanded that everyone
should prostrate before it, the funny three flatly
refused. They boldly replied: “O Nebuchadnezzar,
we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this
matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the
God we serve is able to save us from it, and He will
rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if He
does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will
not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you
have set up” (3:16-18).
They were a little flock indeed; but firm and
zealous for God. They were praying people. When
the king was troubled by a dream and commanded
that all wise men who could not reveal the dream and
its meaning be butchered, this prayer cell did not
tremble with fear. When Daniel told the matter to his
friends, they prayed. Then God revealed the secret to
him (2:17,18).
Human wisdom could not reveal the dream or
its meaning. But the four joined hands and cried to
