Our Future, Our Choice. “And they would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn’t for those meddling kids.” For the 73% of 18-24 year olds that voted to remain in the 2016 referendum the loss was no doubt a bitter pill to swallow. Since then, thousands of us have gathered in protest outside the infamous Houses of Parliament voicing our concerns and passions. We’ve rallied, we’ve signed petitions, and we’ve created movements all over the nation and its capital, just like ‘Our Future, Our Choice.’ ‘Our Future, Our Choice’ is a nationwide youth movement dedicated to stopping Brexit and ensuring long term political decisions have more of a youthful influence. Co-founded by a group of friends spread across London - Lara Spirit, Femi Oluwole, Will Dry, and Calum Millbank-Murphy – it now has over a hundred leaders at universities all over the country. Their message is simple, it’s our future the vote is effecting, and so it should be our voices that are heard. The remain vote was not taken lightly, particularly with a leave majority in the 60+ age bracket and the controversial lies told by campaign teams on both sides of the spectrum to sway the UK’s decision. ‘Our Future, Our Choice’ strives to equal the playing field and ensure that young people feel more empowered to have control over the Britain they will call home in the future. In a video addressed to parliament, Callum confronts this, and his very own Scooby Doo villains: “Representatives of Westminster; if you can’t find the words to be honest and tell your constituents the real truth, which is that Brexit is just a shameful distraction from the issues we’re facing on the ground, then maybe its time to resign and make room for the real leaders.” Citing social and economical issues such as our failing NHS and rising poverty, Millbank’s emotional speech says our country can’t focus on its problems at home whilst diverting precious attention and resources to the on-going negotiations. And it seems you agree with them. In a poll collaboration with Youthonomics and YouGov, the team uncovered just 11% of 18 – 24 year olds believe Brexit will have a positive impact on them, and 40% would be willing to join ranks and campaign against the change. We love the ‘Our Future, Our Choice’ movement and think it’s time for our generation to have a say- do you? Find out more at: www.ofoc.co.uk. BYBLE1.indd 15 02/05/2018 16:59
