Caves of Dubrova
According to the stories, the pagan
sanctuary was functioning till the 17th
century. To get pagans out of there,
Christians had to get monks settled in
that place. Thus, caves were converted
into rooms, where niches, cut by monks
for icons of the remains of saints, have
been preserved. Later, a large number
of rooms were turned into cellars, with
doors being fixed to them.
Kryivka
The military, defence and household
structure of the Ukrainian Resurrection
Army (the UPA), located underground.
Such structures got the widest spread
during the war with the repressive bodies
of the USSR. The UPA’s engineering
departments projected more than 10,000
kryivkas that were used for keeping
motor vehicles, guns, mortars, small
arms, ammunition, and other things.
Also, they served as printing and sewing
shops, hospitals of the Ukrainian Red
Cross as well as dwelling places for the
families of the highest commandment of
the UPA. In addition, kryivkas were used
as food storage bases with the purpose
