Quite the local for Glamorgan University students, this often has live bands but is always a great place to retreat for a catch-up or some night-time drinking. A delicious tapas menu and perfect breakfasts are also amongst Flagstones perks. KOKO GORILLAZ 7-9 Miskin Street, Cardiff 029 2034 1767 www.kokogorilaz.co.uk Kokos has developed a great reputation for the variety of events held at both the rooftop garden and surprisingly grand first floor events room. Having hosted political debates, student bands, charity nights, renowned DJs and much, much more, Kokos has a lot more to offer than may first meet the eye. THE FLORA 136 Cathays Terrace, Cardiff 029 2040 5038 An essential hole on any of round of pub golf, The Flora is a student-friendly pub and a great place to kick off your night. Enjoy the regular quiz night, socialise with friends or watch the footy. THE MACKINTOSH Mundy Place, Cardiff 029 2064 9061 Often labelled as the old man pub of Cathays, the Mackintosh sees locals and students enjoy cheap drinks and pub grub side-by-side. The décor may be a little outdated, but this pub makes up for it with its friendly atmosphere and spacious dining area. GASSY JACKS 39-41 Salisbury Road, Cardiff 029 2023 2608 At the centre of ‘student-ville’ and only a stone’s throw from the Cardiff Students Union, Gassy Jacks has everything a student could ever want from a bar. With cheap drink deals, more fancy dress than you can shake a stick at, and one of the biggest TV screens you’ll find in Cathays, Gassys is perfect for socials and the Six Nations. RAFFLES 67 Park Street, Treforest 01443 486339 A firm staple if you are a student at Glamorgan, Raffles can be packed at the weekends and is bound to be full of people you know. Second only to the Union in popularity, the roof garden is unlike any within a 100-mile radius. THE TAF Cardiff University Students Union, Park Place, Cardiff 029 2078 1400 The Taf is Cardiff University’s main student bar. Ideally situated next-door to Solus, there’ll be numerous occasions when you stumble from the Taf to the dance floor after consuming your bodyweight in cheap booze. With pool tables, food, big TV screens and wi-fi, it’s also a great place to watch sport and meet friends during the day. THE WOODVILLE 1-5 Woodville Road, Cardiff 029 2039 7859 Fondly known by students as the Woody, the Woodville pub is well-known for its ‘Quids’ night, cheap food and bustling student atmosphere. The Woodville pub is easily one of the busiest student pubs in Cardiff, and if you don’t know it yet, you soon will. DUKE OF WELLINGTON 48 High Street, Cowbridge 02920782079 www.dukeofwellingtoncowbridge.co.uk The Duke of Wellington is one of the newer Brains gastropubs to appear. On the most part it’s pretty much what we’ve come to expect from these kinds of establishments, with its traditional pub exterior and comfy, living roomesque interior. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though, the Duke promises good food at reasonable prices and a thoroughly pleasant atmosphere. Buzz 09
